Teen Leadership Conference
Location: Camp Marston
Hours Completed: 17
Last weekend, all of the San Diego delegations drove up to Camp Marston in Julian, CA for TLC. This conference consists of a whole weekend that SDSC (San Diego Super Cluster) spends getting to know other delegates and create bonds through activities and sessions that help better our leadership skills.
My favorite session that I attended would have to be the one about networking. We learned that the key factor of networking is listening. Normally, in a conversation, most people's minds are clustered with thoughts of what they want to say next as opposed to actually paying attention to what the other individual is actually trying to communicate to them. This gets in the way of one person being able to take in and correctly interpret what the other individual is trying to say. Another thing I learned from this session was that when someone is telling you something, before adding on your opinion, ask permission. Also, make sure that you can provide solutions for that individual. These are all steps that can make someone a great leader, someone that others can count on for help and advice.
I also attended a financial management session which described the financial responsibilities students will have once they attend college. In this session we learned that we should always put away some money for college, emergencies, and personal needs. The last session I attended has to do with college. This session was the least helpful to me because I knew most of the points the advisers brought up. One thing I didn't know though, was the fact that FAFSA and other financial aid organizations can help a student out so much with their college funds. There are also so many random scholarships one can receive that can aid in helping them get into college.
Overall, what I brought back with me from TLC was the confidence to be a leader and to listen to others as opposed to just wanting to get out what I have to say. I've displayed these skills in school by participating more in classroom discussions and outside of school by improving my public speaking skills and thinking things through before I say them.
